The Philippines in a Nutshell
I didn't intend for Sister Philippines to have a major major role (quote Ms. Venus Raj [link]), because she isn't even part of Europe; our little, underestimated country lies far east of the setting of SATW. But one thing about Filipinos is that they're spreading around the globe as an unnoticed but omnipresent force: well, workforce. A lot of our talent and genius is being drained from home and sent as overseas workers, where we are either generally discriminated or decently respected. That was what she meant when she said (brother) Philippines had many part time jobs. You have to be very rich (which is often not the case), or you'll need a lot of medial jobs to support a family.

Beyond the crappy politics, terrorism, and desperate poverty, a typical Filipino, in my view, is conservative, musically inclined, warm, very resourceful, and optimistic. We're also known for being an hour late on all sorts of occasions, but we can be dedicated to anything if we wanted to. (I wasn't able to show all of those traits yet, but we'll get there. ;) )

About this comic
In focus here is a Filipino's too-easy acceptance of other cultures. My history classes were rusty, but in a nutshell, the Spanish occupation (which lasted about 300 years) went nowhere, but when America colonized the Philippines, we wanted to be part of the United States for the "freedom", benefits, and new way of life they presented. But America called us a "liability". The best we do these days is to take in everything American, from food to music tastes and elsewhere. Our official language is Filipino AND English; I think it's a way of connecting with the world, but globalization is really just another term for "Americanization". So when Sister Philippines drops in on our favorite SATW cast, she fell in love with them easily, although that could be a manifestation of my personal liking for Denmark and Finland, who are such adorable characters. <3

Update
Thanks to *Karalora for correcting me on Norway's eye color. :XD:

I watched humon first and then got to your comics, i think Filipinos are amazing, most of my favorite comic artists come from there, and don't you worry about my country not liking Filipinos, our country doesn't like a lot of countries and will wage war with anyone with just a little provocation, no wonder humon draws america with a gun, and it's even worse on the inside... usa doesn't just hate other people, it hates the people inside of it as well... oh well, wish all countries could be in peace, but it is kinda the human nature to look at ways to hate each other, I on the other side, just say "forgive and forget", then all countries could be friends.

I have been to the Philippines! Manila scared the crap out of me though... There were guards with maschine guns everywhere, also at the building I lived in. I even think I offered the guard a burger just to be on his good side :XD: What I remember most is that the Philippines are very good at remembering names.

This comic of yours is the reason I got hooked on SATW. Curse you, Cezille07!

I think my husband looks like Finland (he actually is half Finn!) but with glasses and no hat.

Hm. Considering amount of Philipinos coming to Finland to work as nurses, I am not surprised.

May I please correct your spelling, it's "Filipinos", not Philipinos or any other variation. ;D
I've read an article about that. Is it true...that they'd have to study nursing again before being employed properly? :(

Well, they have to go through a refreshment course to learn Finnish medical customs. I don't know how extensive that training is.

I don't like the idea that Filipinos around the world are basically domestic helpers. We have great people, great artists working for DC comics and Pixar, fashion designers, models, businessmen, etc.

Idk. Although how the character's portrayed in the comic is cute, the thought kinda makes me sad... :(

Very amusing! (I also commented over on the SatW forum.) I'm still trying to figure out the meaning of Finland's weird little raised-eyebrow smile.

(I hate to say it...but I have to point out that you got Norway's eye color wrong. They're blue, not brown. What else would you expect from a Nordic stereotype?)

I think she's cute, so welcome Sister Philippines, and we hope to see your brother in the future!
Not that it makes any difference, but is she from Mindanao or Luzon? I had a neighbor from near Pinatubo, and he didn't like people from Mindanao....

Oh, is that so? I was thinking of expanding the characters into the three major regions Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. In my mind Mindanao is an angry character, a bit like Finland, but more violent and with a gun. Sister Philippines (as she is now) represents Luzon. ;D

Oops; I forgot one. Yeah, Mindanao might be angry ... hey, instead of a gun, how about a killer yo-yo? Or is that a northern weapon....

Ooh, killer yo-yo? LOL that does it, I'm definitely pushing through with expanding. ;D Thanks. :D

I've done a little digging, but apparently old Philippine weapons consist of different kinds of swords. Hopefully that won't make him look like a Finland copycat. Maybe a spear? Nah... Kinda generic, huh. I'll think about that. ;D

That's why I suggested the yo-yo; something different, and unexpected. Heck, nobody is afraid of a yo-yo! A child's toy -- *whacked alongside the head with a yo-yo* oww!

Definitely expand....
