The Philippines in a Nutshell
I didn't intend for Sister Philippines to have a major major role (quote Ms. Venus Raj [link]
), because she isn't even part of Europe; our little, underestimated country lies far east of the setting of SATW. But one thing about Filipinos is that they're spreading around the globe as an unnoticed but omnipresent force: well, workforce. A lot of our talent and genius is being drained from home and sent as overseas workers, where we are either generally discriminated or decently respected. That was what she meant when she said (brother) Philippines had many part time jobs. You have to be very rich (which is often not the case), or you'll need a lot of medial jobs to support a family.
Beyond the crappy politics, terrorism, and desperate poverty, a typical Filipino, in my view, is conservative, musically inclined, warm, very resourceful, and optimistic. We're also known for being an hour late on all sorts of occasions, but we can be dedicated to anything if we wanted to. (I wasn't able to show all
of those traits yet, but we'll get there.
)About this comic
In focus here is a Filipino's too-easy acceptance of other cultures. My history classes were rusty, but in a nutshell, the Spanish occupation (which lasted about 300 years) went nowhere, but when America colonized the Philippines, we wanted
to be part of the United States for the "freedom", benefits, and new way of life they presented. But America called us a "liability". The best we do these days is to take in everything American, from food to music tastes and elsewhere. Our official language is Filipino AND English; I think it's a way of connecting with the world, but globalization is really just another term for "Americanization". So when Sister Philippines drops in on our favorite SATW cast, she fell in love with them easily, although that could be a manifestation of my personal liking for Denmark and Finland, who are such
adorable characters. <3 Update
